A Thank You To @DaveKerpen, & A Valuable Social Media Lesson To Boot

“Surprise & delight just 1 customer in today’s social media world, and the WORLD may hear about it…” via @DaveKerpen

All too often I have an immediate and jaded reaction to these kinds of statements. But Dave Kerpen lives it, breathes it and runs a business on it. Dave is the CEO of NYC-based Likeable Media, a very successful and nationally-recognized social media marketing firm. Dave is also the author of Likeable Social Media, a NY Times best seller and is followed by more than 20,000 people on his personal Twitter account.

All of which is to say there is no good reason why Dave would offer to help little old me. But on two separate occasions, he has. To be fair, he hasn’t directly offered to help me, but has offered to help anyone who asks for it on Twitter.

Case Study: Give Them What They Want (And What You’re Best At)

About  a year ago, a client of mine received a very special camera. The client is a post-production film and video facility. The camera was a Red Epic-M. Seeing as this is not a blog about video and film technology, I’ll save you the details. But, suffice to say, the Epic-M is the most drool-worthy camera on the planet right now. Read more…

4 Not-So-Obvious Industries Gumroad Could Revolutionize

If you haven’t heard of Gumroad yet, you will. The concept, from 19-yr-old Pinterest designer Sahil Lavingia, provides an alternative pricing and distribution model for anyone looking to sell their wares (as long as it can be uploaded or linked to). But it’s a bit more than that, in that it’s way less complicated than that. Including registration time, you can have your product for sale in less than two minutes and let all of your followers on Twitter know about it. Oh yeah, that reminds me – it’s designed for the social consumer. Interested yet? Read more…

5 Signs The Social Revolution May Be Passing You By

Social Media RevolutionThere is a very real revolution happening right now in the way brands and corporations do business. It’s not just about how companies are marketing, advertising and selling their products and services. That is a symptom of the revolution. The real revolution is happening internally as businesses across the world are changing their culture to better reflect the new attitude and expectations of their consumers.

But, like any revolution, there are those who simply are not getting on board. They hear they need a social media strategy, they just don’t know what that means or why it’s so necessary. They are successful and have been for a long time without social media, so they ignore it. Whatever the reason, companies on every street corner in every city are getting passed by, they just haven’t realized it yet.

It’s All About Value

Ask VW: Good marketing even works on hippies.

This Week’s Headline: Social Media “Gurus” Continue To Spew Nonsense

I just recently found myself nodding in zombie-like agreement as I read the following warning from a social media guru:

“Many companies view social media as a marketing opportunitiy rather than a networking opportunity. Pushing content at people via social media… simply does not work. “

His point was that social media for business is about networking as opposed to marketing. It’s a catchy thought that certainly makes some sense. We’ve all heard how business should simply listen, converse and never, ever offend anyone with our slimy presence in the nirvana that is social media. It just feels so much more tasteful to network than it does to market.

But, once I got passed the catchiness of the quote and the simplicity of its thought, I suddenly came back to reality – he’s wrong. Not dead wrong, but pretty damn close. Read more…

Sith Lords, Bourbon & Other Reasons Why Gentlemint Somehow Works

Gentlemint has been described as “the Pinterest for men,” or “Pinterest if Pinterest had chest hair.” I can’t vouch for either description, but I can confirm that the two sites have one important element in common – massive and sudden growth. Why Gentlemint? Why indeed. Read more…
