Social Media RevolutionThere is a very real revolution happening right now in the way brands and corporations do business. It’s not just about how companies are marketing, advertising and selling their products and services. That is a symptom of the revolution. The real revolution is happening internally as businesses across the world are changing their culture to better reflect the new attitude and expectations of their consumers.

But, like any revolution, there are those who simply are not getting on board. They hear they need a social media strategy, they just don’t know what that means or why it’s so necessary. They are successful and have been for a long time without social media, so they ignore it. Whatever the reason, companies on every street corner in every city are getting passed by, they just haven’t realized it yet.

This Week’s Headline: Social Media “Gurus” Continue To Spew Nonsense

I just recently found myself nodding in zombie-like agreement as I read the following warning from a social media guru:

“Many companies view social media as a marketing opportunitiy rather than a networking opportunity. Pushing content at people via social media… simply does not work. “

His point was that social media for business is about networking as opposed to marketing. It’s a catchy thought that certainly makes some sense. We’ve all heard how business should simply listen, converse and never, ever offend anyone with our slimy presence in the nirvana that is social media. It just feels so much more tasteful to network than it does to market.

But, once I got passed the catchiness of the quote and the simplicity of its thought, I suddenly came back to reality – he’s wrong. Not dead wrong, but pretty damn close. Read more…
